Grief is the price we pay for love!

Nancy Helena McGee, 77, died March 22 at her Greenwood, IN, home with her beloved husband, Jim, and family at her bedside.

Nancy had courageously battled cancer since last summer.

The daughter of the late Robert and Marie Gerlach was born on Feb. 24, 1934, in Indianapolis.

As a teenager, Nancy attended Broad Ripple High School and was a member of the 1952 graduating class.

Recently, Nancy recalled earning extra money as a teenager by baking cakes, pies, cream puffs and éclairs. The éclairs were in high demand, she said.

Friends and family members cite Nancy’s sense of humor as one of her most redeeming qualities. She particularly enjoyed banter with brother-in-law, Lynn Dunn, and often recalled and recited their exchanges between laughs.

If sister Barbara Dunn, Lynn’s wife, was in the same room with Nancy, it was a good bet they would be laughing within a minute or two.

Nancy had relocated from Indiana to California nearly 50 years ago where she worked in the retail and banquet industries.

California is where Nancy found her most prized and honored friend, her husband, Jim McGee. She often referred to the man she married on Dec. 9, 1977, as her “Rock.”

“He is the best husband any woman could hope for,” Nancy said a week before her death. “We just connected.”

After retiring, the couple moved from their San Francisco Bay area home to the mountains of Gold Rush country, about 65 miles from Yosemite National Park in Northern California.

Nancy and Jim moved to Greenwood, Indiana, in July 2003 to be closer to family.

During the past decade, Nancy used her free time to build and maintain renewed relationships with her five adult daughters. Her children had relocated in various states across the country.

“Each one of them is special to me,” Nancy said. “They are all different and a lot of fun to be around.”

Among Nancy’s last wishes was a request that her children and their families assist her husband with adjusting to her death. She wanted everyone to know she did not fear death.

Nancy did not pull any punches when asked what she thought about any subject. If you didn’t want to hear what she thought, she said, you shouldn’t have asked her the question.

And in her own words: “That’s all folks.”

Nancy is survived by her husband, James McGee, sisters Barbara (Lynn) Dunn, Indianapolis, Dorothy (Donald) Potter, Arlington, Washington, and her brother Robert (Jane) Gerlach, Tampa.

Her daughters include Susan (Dennis) Games, Pensacola, FL, Pamela (Eugene) DeGraw, Indianapolis, Debbie (Paul) Bird, Greenwood, Peggy Esselborn, Pueblo, Colo., Jodie Mosier, Kokomo, and one son, David (Patricia) Esselborn, Pasadena, Texas,

Nancy also is survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 12-2 PM at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. Greenwood with a memorial service starting at 2.
